The most common pet birds are
psittacines, or the hook-billed parrot family. They make wonderful
and affectionate pets, especially when hand raised. With recent
laws prohibiting importation of wild caught parrots, domestically
raised pet birds are the norm now.
Prior to acquiring a pet bird you should research the topic to
understand your responsibilities to these pets. Most birds need
lots of human contact to keep them socially fulfilled and require
effort to properly feed and clean up after. Pre-purchase
examinations, including lab-work are recommended to ensure you're
getting a healthy pet.
Malnutrition is the most common problem seen in pet birds. A common
misconception is that birds eat only seed. Seeds are deficient in
vitamins and minerals and are too high in fat. Birds love seeds so
it may be difficult to change their diet. They may starve
themselves if deprived of seed. A balanced diet is one of the
better commercial pelleted diets, supplemented with healthy foods
from your table! We have information on bird diets we would love to
share, as well as advice on how to convert your seed-eating
"junkie" to a better diet. |
