After getting set-up
reptiles are relatively simple to care for and require less space
and attention than most other pets. Thus, busy apartment dwellers
are frequently becoming amateur herpetologists.
While reptiles are generally easy to care for, a lot of research is
essential to maintain a healthy pet. Each species of reptile needs
to have its environmental and nutritional needs addressed
prior to purchase. Temperature, humidity, size of habitat,
substrate, hiding and basking areas, and ultraviolet light
requirements vary from species to species. Malnutrition is a very
common syndrome in pet reptiles. Inadequate husbandry and nutrition
account for 90% of the reptile problems we see in our hospital. We
are happy to provide information or sources for such to help you
avoid these pitfalls prior to your selection.
Reptiles frequently harbor internal and external parasites so a new
pet exam and fecal test (please bring a fresh sample) are good
insurance in preventing unthrifty animals as well as providing for
a consultation on your particular pet's requirements.
