About Your South Austin, TX Veterinary Hospital

Westgate Pet & Bird Hospital is a full service, small animal, avian and exotic species veterinary hospital providing comprehensive preventative, medical, surgical, diagnostic, and dental care.

Westgate Pet & Bird was founded in 1986 by Dr Harry A Miller III, in the interest of providing care for many species that were not served by traditional veterinary medicine at that time. Dr Paul Brandt and Dr Rick Lusk joined the team in 1991 and 1992 respectively, shortly after graduating from Texas A&M’s School of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr Miller’s daughter, Tiena, a former groomer by profession, met Dr Brandt and they later married in 1997. Continuing the family tradition, Dr Brandt became a managing partner and later transitioned, in the mid – 2000s, to the current role of Owner and Medical Director.

Expanding our team of talented veterinarians, Dr Kimberly Doll joined us in 2017 upon graduation from Texas A&M. 2018 saw Dr April Lee becoming a permanent addition to the family, after several years supporting our veterinarians with relief services. We are also fortunate to have Dr Kara Moore assisting us with canine and feline patient care.

Today we are proud to be among the top 15% of veterinary hospitals in the United States and Canada to be accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). Since 1987, we have upheld the association's high standards in 20 different areas and are routinely evaluated on over 900 different standards of veterinary care. In recognition of exceeding these standards, we received the AAHA Hospital of the Year Merit Award.

We also take pride in our community involvement: Dr Brandt is currently an active board member and consulting veterinarian for Austin Wildlife Rescue; and Dr Lusk is an adjunct professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine.

With an eye on the future, the Westgate Pet & Bird family is focused on education and growth. Continuing our own education is vital for the practice, and with so many different species there is always something new to learn. Our doctors and staff regularly attending veterinary conferences and seminars, then share newly acquired knowledge with the rest of the staff during monthly staff training. The more we know the better we can serve our patients and clients, thereby encouraging the professional development of our hospital and personal growth of our staff.

We also contribute to the education of aspiring veterinarians leading to the growth of the veterinary profession. We regularly host pre-veterinary internship programs through local high schools. Due to our strong reputation in exotic medicine, externship opportunities for current veterinary students are also in high demand. Over the years, we have helped to instruct and inspire students from across the nation.
