Exotic Animal Healthcare

Exotic patients make up approximately 30 % of the cases we see daily here at Westgate Pet & Bird Hospital. They can be the most challenging patients we treat here for the following reasons:

  • They can be more difficult and/or fragile to safely handle for examinations and procedures.
  • Exotics are harder to medicate due to their size and eating habits. We may use the services of a custom compounding pharmacist to effectively dose these patients.
  • Research into diseases and treatments are less funded and more difficult to access than traditional species.
  • Surgery is almost always considered “micro” and requires specialized instruments, optics, materials and a steady hand by our skilled surgical team.

Wellness and preventative services are recommended annually for exotic pets. These visits focus on nutrition and home care to identify and reduce health risks. Grooming services such as beak and nail trims may also be important to prevent health problems. Overgrown beaks or other abnormalities may indicate an underlying health issue and will therefore be evaluated by our staff veterinarians. Toe nail trims and wing trims are provided by our skilled technical team.
