Behavioral Counseling

Understanding Your Pet's Behavior and How We Can Help

Westgate Pet & Bird Hospital utilizes behavior wellness programs as part of our veterinary medical care. Our programs include establishing criteria for a behaviorally healthy pet, educating owners about pet behavioral needs, encouraging pet socialization and helping owners learn successful methods for discouraging inappropriate behavior.

Inappropriate behavior may include, but is not limited to:

  • Unwarranted aggression towards humans or other animals
  • Anxiety (including separation anxiety)
  • Fear
  • Inappropriate elimination
  • Compulsive behaviors (such as constant chewing or barking)
  • Cognitive dysfunction (including dementia)

During veterinary visits, our team will assess your pet’s behavior. Based on this analysis, we will adjust our approach, utilizing low stress handling and positive conditioning so that each visit is easier for the pet and their owner. In some case cases, pharmacological assistance may be indicated in treating behavior disorders, often in conjunction with behavioral modification.

If we feel that your pet may benefit from more in-depth or focused behavioral therapy, we will provide referrals to local behavior specialists.

Nutritional Counseling

Providing Your Pets with A Healthy Diet

Proper nutrition plays an important role in promoting health and wellness for your pet, just as it does for us. Since your pet’s nutritional requirements change with age, activity level and lifestyle our veterinarians offer individualized nutritional counseling for all life stages. We also provide guidance for pets with specific diseases, such as diabetes, kidney disease and obesity, that can benefit from specialized prescription diets.

We offer the following diets: Hill’s Prescription, Royal Canin, Purina Pro Plan Veterinary, Harrison’s Bird Foods and Oxbow Animal Health for Rabbit & Guinea Pigs. If there is a particular diet that your pet requires that is not available here at Westgate Pet & Bird Hospital, we also offer a wide variety of maintenance and prescription diets through our online pharmacy for convenient delivery to your home.

If you have questions about whether your pet’s nutritional needs are being met, please contact us to schedule a consultation by calling (512) 892-4463(512)‐892-4463.
