Wellness Care & Prevention

We generally follow guidelines as published by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA ) canine vaccine guidelines and the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) feline vaccine guidelines.

We select vaccine products based on a proven track record of efficacy, safety and patient/client support from the manufacturer.

Immunizations

Immunizations stimulate your pet’s immune system to ward off infectious diseases. Pediatric core vaccines (for dogs and cats) start at 6-8 weeks of age and will be boosted every month until your pet is four months old.

Frequency of wellness/preventative care visits varies by age. Our doctors may make changes to our general recommendations if your pet has a chronic issue that requires close monitoring.

Our Recommendations

Below are our recommended number of visits based on age:

  • Pediatrics ( < 1 year old ) - two to four times a year
  • Adults ( 1 – 7 years old ) - once a year
  • Seniors ( > 8 years ) - twice a year

We also recommend blood panels every 1-2 years for healthy, young patients to establish baseline values. Additional diagnostics like urine testing, blood pressure monitoring and imaging studies may also be indicated, especially with senior pets.

Early detection of health problems through regular exams and diagnostics lead to better patient outcomes overall!

Parasite / Flea / Tick Prevention

The mild climate and abundant vegetation in Central Texas makes it especially popular with parasites that can spread disease. Parasitic infestations initially create patient discomfort but left unchecked, can also be also be deadly to our pets!

Many of these parasites are zoonotic, which means they can affect people too! That is why the Center for Disease Control (CDC), Companion Animal Parasite Control (CAPC) and Westgate Pet & Bird Hospital recommends strategic parasitic treatment and monitoring programs for your pet.

We will design an effective parasite control program for your pet based on their individual and environmental risks. We also provide safe and effective monthly preventatives through our hospital and online pharmacy.
